| I dont know how many of you guys live in the UK or elsewhere in the world but in this country we're experiencing something of a nanny state, with regular proclamations that we should eat more healthily, drink less, smoke less (smoking ban coming in April) and so on. What's it like where you guys come from and what do you make of it? |

Hey! Welcome to daily American society! Lol
"Americans are too fat" - hear it all the time. We have a smoking ban here in Colorado on public places, except casinos - but they're working to eliminate the casino exemption now. I'm sure if they could, they'd make smoking here illegal. But it would only drive it into underground, and then we would re-experience the days of prohibition like when alcohol was illegal.
I think getting healthy is a good message, but I think expressing it in a healthy manner to the masses is equally important. Like right now, I dont want underweight, anorexic (no offense, mind) celebs being the "ideal". That's very scary, but it seems to be a fad here, especially among teenagers.
Diabetes and heart disease are problems among our population, and it can be directly linked to poor diet and exercise habits - so I don't think there is anything wrong with promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Also, we are inundated here with prescription pill advertisments. I don't know if the same holds true in the UK, but I think that's scary. You can't cure everything with a pill, and you can't live the rest of your life being a pill depository. |

The same here , its already prohibited in public places such as offices and so , On the trainstation ( outside) you have to smoke where there is a "smoking pole" . I quit smoking 7 years ago, thank god because its so stupid to stand outside smoking.
And the same about heatlhy food because the children get to fat , but that`s a good thing to do , its very sad to see such chubby kids who get anything what they asked for. |

you haven't been able to smoke in bars or restaurants here for 3 or 4 years, its great! you don't come home from a night of drinking smelling like an ashtray. i quit the nasty habit years ago and couldn't be happier. i exercise everyday and don't get out of breath from a flight of stairs. i also quit eating fast food last year and cook 97% of the food i eat. i feel like i am in great shape and actually have energy to do things beside fall asleep on the couch after work.
i live in southern California, probably one of the most superficial places on earth. everything is health conscious, if you don't want to spend time in the gym, just go to a plastic surgeon for an easy way out. its pretty sad if you get caught up in it, i would never get surgery. but i like feeling good about my health instead pounding down some mcdonalds and killing my lungs. |
